Uno (; from Spanish and Italian for ‘one’; stylized as UNO) is an American shedding-type card game that is played with a specially printed deck. The game’s general principles put it into the crazy eights family of card games, and it is similar to the traditional European game mau-mau.

It has been a Mattel brand since 1992.^[3]

History[edit]

The game was originally developed in 1971 by Merle Robbins in Reading, Ohio, a suburb of Cincinnati. When his family and friends began to play more and more, he spent $8,000 to have 5,000 copies of the game made.^[4] He sold it from his barbershop at first, and local businesses began to sell it as well. Robbins later sold the rights to Uno to a group of friends headed by Robert Tezak, a funeral parlor owner in Joliet, Illinois, for $50,000 plus royalties of 10 cents per game. Tezak formed International Games, Inc., to market Uno, with offices behind his funeral parlor. The games were produced by Lewis Saltzman of Saltzman Printers in Maywood, Illinois.

In 1992, International Games became part of the Mattel family of companies.^[5]

Official rules[edit]

The aim of the game is to be the first player to score 500 points, achieved (usually over several rounds of play) by being the first to play all of one’s own cards and scoring points for the cards still held by the other players.

The 2018 edition of the game consists of 112 cards: 25 in each of four color suits (red, yellow, green, blue), each suit consisting of one zero, two each of 1 through 9, and two each of the action cards «Skip», «Draw Two», and «Reverse». The deck also contains four «Wild» cards, four «Wild Draw Four», one «Wild Shuffle Hands» and three «Wild Customizable».^[2] Sets manufactured prior to 2018 do not contain these last two types of Wild cards, for a total of 108 cards in the deck.^[6]

For each hand, a dealer is determined by having each player randomly draw one card from the deck. The player with the highest number card deals, and all cards are reshuffled into the deck to begin the dealing.

To start a hand, seven cards are dealt to each player, and the top card of the remaining deck is flipped over and set aside to begin the discard pile. The player to the dealer’s left plays first unless the first card on the discard pile is an action or Wild card (see below). On a player’s turn, they must do one of the following:

• play one card matching the discard in color, number, or symbol
• play a Wild card, or a playable Wild Draw Four card (see restriction below)
• draw the top card from the deck, and play it if possible

Cards are played by laying them face-up on top of the discard pile. Play initially proceeds clockwise around the table.

Action or Wild cards have the following effects:

• A player who draws a playable card from the deck must either play or keep that card and may play no other card from their hand on that turn.
• A player may play a Wild card at any time, even if that player has other playable cards.
• A player may play a Wild Draw Four card only if that player has no cards matching the current color. The player may have cards of a different color matching the current number or symbol or a Wild card and still play the Wild Draw Four card.^[6] A player who plays a Wild Draw Four may be challenged by the next player in sequence (see Penalties) to prove that their hand meets this condition.
• If not otherwise challenged, an illegally played Wild Draw Four stays without penalty for its player.
• When playing a Wild or Wild Draw Four card, a player may declare the current color as the next one to be matched.
• If the draw deck runs out during play, the top discard is set aside and the rest of the pile is shuffled to create a new deck. Play then proceeds normally.
• It is illegal to trade cards of any sort with another player.

A player who plays their penultimate card must call «Uno» as a warning to the other players.^[7]

The first player to get rid of their last card («going out») wins the hand and scores points for the cards held by the other players. Number cards count their face value, all action cards count 20, and Wild and Wild Draw Four cards count 50. If a Draw Two or Wild Draw Four card is played to go out, the next player in the sequence must draw the appropriate number of cards before the score is tallied.

The first player to score 500 points wins the game.

Penalties[edit]

• If a player does not call «Uno» after laying down their penultimate card and is caught before the next player in sequence starts to take a turn (i.e., plays a card from their hand, draws from the deck, or touches the discard pile), they must draw two cards as a penalty. If the player is not caught in time or remembers to call «Uno» before being caught, no penalty applies to that player.^[6]
• If a player plays a Wild Draw Four card, the next player in turn order may choose to challenge its use. The player who used the Wild Draw Four must privately show their hand to the challenging player in order to demonstrate that they had no prior matching colored cards. If the challenge is successful, then the challenged player must draw four cards instead and play continues with the challenger. Otherwise, the challenger must draw six cards – the four cards they were already required to draw plus two more cards – and lose their turn.^[6] In either case, the Wild Draw Four stays with its chosen color.

Two-player game[edit]

In a two-player game, the Reverse card acts like a Skip card; when played, the other player misses a turn.^[8]

House rules[edit]

The following house rules are suggested in the Uno instructions to alter the game:

• Progressive or Stacking Uno: If a draw card is played, and the following player has a card with the same symbol, they can play that card and «stack» the penalty, which adds to the current penalty and passes it to the following player^[6] (although a +4 cannot be stacked on a +2, or vice versa).^[9] This house rule is so commonly used that there was widespread Twitter surprise in 2019 when Mattel stated that stacking was not part of the standard rules of Uno.^[9]
• Seven-O: Every time a «7» is played, the player who played the «7» card must trade their hand with another player of their choice. Every time a «0» is played, all players pass their hands to the next player in the current direction of play.^[6]
• Jump-In: If a player has exactly the same card (both number and color) as the top card of the discard pile, they may play it immediately, even if it is not their turn. The game then continues as if that player had just taken their turn.^[6]

2018 rule changes[edit]

The two new types of Wild cards have the following functions:

• Wild Shuffle Hands: The player using this card collects all cards held by all players, then shuffles and re-deals them.
• Wild Customizable: These cards are blank and can have a house rule assigned to them.

Either type can be played on any turn and is worth 40 points when a player goes out.^[2]

Card and deck styles[edit]

Modern Uno action cards bear symbols which denote their action, except for the Wild cards which still bear the word «Wild». Before the design change,^[when?] such cards in English versions of the game had letters only. Earlier English versions can be recognized by the absence of the white rim that surrounds the edge of most Uno cards.

Other versions of the game use symbols and images in both old and new designs, especially ones with Wild cards that do not bear the word «Wild». There are also language-free versions of the newer styles that do not bear the word «Wild» but have the same styling.

The 2010 «Uno Mod» edition uses symbols instead of letters or numbers.

On September 16, 2017, Mattel released Uno ColorAdd, which was designed specifically for those suffering from color blindness.^[10]

On October 1, 2019, Mattel released a Braille version of their game with Mark Riccobono, president of the National Federation of the Blind. Riccobono said in a press release, «The fact that a blind person is now able to play a classic game of UNO straight out of the box with both blind and sighted friends or family members is a truly meaningful moment for our community.»^[11][12]

Special Uno games[edit]

Uno H2O[edit]

Uno H₂O differs from the standard game in that the cards are transparent and waterproof. Play is identical to the standard pre-2018 Uno game, with the addition of two types of «Wild Downpour» cards. When one of these is played, all other players must draw either one or two cards as indicated on the card. The player using it may then declare the next color to be matched.

Variations[edit]

Many variations from standard gameplay exist, such as Elimination Uno, Speed Uno and Pirate Uno.^[17]

In 2018, Mattel released a spin-off of Uno entitled Dos; the game is differentiated primarily by having a «center row» of discard piles, where pairs of cards that add up to the sum of a card on the top of one of the piles may be discarded.^[18][19]

The game can be played with two decks of standard playing cards, if the jokers are marked up as the zeroes of the four suits, and the royalty treated as the special cards.

Uno: The Game Show[edit]

In March 2013, it was announced that Mattel and the Gurin Company^[21][22] were teaming up to create a game show based on the card game, produced as a half-hour daily strip with a $100,000 cash jackpot along with a primetime version in which contestants competed for 1 million dollars. However, the idea was scrapped later on.

Film adaptation[edit]

On February 4, 2021, an action heist comedy film based on the game was announced to be in development for Mattel Films with Lil Yachty of record label Quality Control Music developing and being eyed for the lead role alongside the label’s managers Kevin «Coach K» Lee and Pierre «P» Thomas, and Brian Sher for Quality Films producing, Marcy Kelly writing, and Robbie Brenner and Kevin McKeon leading the project as executive producer and supervising producer, respectively.^[23]

История игры

Игра Уно была придумана в США в 1930-е годы. Если перевести это название с испанского, получится «один» («единица»).

В 1971 году парикмахер Мерл Роббинс первым запатентовал игру. Начальный набор карт он нарисовал у себя дома. Игра вскоре стала очень популярна. Спустя 10 лет один из фанатов игры приобрел у Роббинса патент на неё. Прошло еще 10 лет, и обладателем прав на игру стал бренд Mattel. Именно он и распространил игру по всему миру.

Кстати, Уно была похожа на известную в Европе Мау-Мау (есть своеобразный русский аналог под названием Сто одно).

В чем смысл игры уно

Из карточной колоды всем игрокам раздают по 7 карт, а в центр стола переворачивают первую игровую карту. Нужно по очереди выкладывать карты, которые совпадают по цвету или значению с той, что лежит на центре. Такой же принцип в «американском дураке» или «Сто одно». В УНО присутствуют и особые карты, создающие всяческие эффекты (например, пропустить ход, взять еще карт, поменять направление хода).

Цель — скинуть все свои карты.

Когда остается последняя карта на руках, нужно крикнуть во всеуслышание «Уно», т.е. «одна». Собственно от этого и пошло название игры. Нужно избавиться и от нее тоже, а остальные игроки будут пытаться помешать сделать это: подкидывать «особенные» карты с действиями, чтобы заставить пропустить ход или взять новые карты.

В каждой партии карты выпадают в разном порядке и игроки их будут использовать иначе, так что каждая игра будет отличаться от предыдущей. Именно в этом и заключается основное очарование игры УНО.

Все карты уно: значение и их количество

В игре участвует 108 карт. Общее количество вместе с пустыми картами в колоде – 112, но такие колоды сейчас редкость. Раньше их использовали, чтобы придумать свои собственные правила в игре, или для замены потерявшейся карты.

Карты делятся на обычные и специальные:

• 19 голубых карт – от 0 до 9
• 19 зеленых карт – от 0 до 9
• 19 красных карт – от 0 до 9
• 19 желтых карт – от 0 до 9
• 8 карт Вытяни Две – по 2 на каждый цвет: голубой, зеленый, красный и желтый
• 8 карт Смена направления – по 2 на каждый цвет: голубой, зеленый, красный и желтый
• 8 карт Пропусти ход – по 2 на каждый цвет: голубой, зеленый, красный и желтый
• 4 Диких карты
• 4 Диких карты Вытяни Четыре

Цифровые карты

На каждый из четырех цветов — красный, синий, желтый, зеленый — по две карты с цифрами от 1 до 9  и по одной с цифрой «0».

Внимание! Для легкости понимания шестёрка и девятка подчеркнуты снизу: 6 и 9.

Итого 9 цифр на 4 цвета в 2 экземплярах = 72 карты + 4 карты с нулём для каждого цвета = всего 76 цифровых карт.

«Дикие» или «черные» карты

Ими можно ходить тогда, когда больше нечем, несмотря на цвет и номинал предыдущей карты:

1. «Дикая карта» (смена цвета). На черном поле изображен эллипс, разделенный на 4 доли, каждая своего цвета: зеленый, синий, желтый, красный. С такой картой вы вольны выбирать цвет, который будет следующим (он может быть хоть какой, включая предыдущий). Дикую карту можно выложить в свой ход даже когда вы имеете на руках другую карту, которая может продолжить игру. Если она перевернулась, когда вы только начали играть, участник по левую руку от сдающего называет цвет, продолжающий игру.
2. «Дикая карта + Вытяни четыре». На черном поле изображен белый эллипс с условными обозначениями карт разных цветов внутри (красная, желтая, зеленая, синяя). По углам карты написано «+4». Здесь вы сами можете выбрать цвет для продолжения игры, ПЛЮС следующий участник БЕРЕТ 4 карты из колоды, пропуская при этом свой ход. Однако, есть определенный нюанс! Этой картой можно воспользоваться, если у вас НЕТ подходящей по цвету и номиналу карты. Но при желании вы можете попробовать ее использовать, даже если у вас есть подходящая к ходу карта, хотя это накладывает определенный риск (описан ниже). Перевернувшись на старте игры, она возвращается в колоду, а участники выбирают новую стартовую карту.

Чёрные карты («смена цвета», «смена цвета плюс четыре») по 4 штуки всех видов = 8 диких карт.

ШТРАФ: Если у вас возникли подозрения, что Дикую карту Вытяни Четыре использовали против вас вразрез с правилами (игрок выбросил её при наличии у него подходящей карты для хода), можно опротестовать этот ход. Походивший игрок должен продемонстрировать свои карты, имеющиеся в наличии. В случае доказанной вины он, а не вы, берет 4 дополнительные карты. А вот если прав был он, 4 дополнительных карты должны будете взять вы, ПЛЮС еще 2 (итого 6 карт)!

Карты действия

Активных карты — это цветные листы с нарисованными символами игровых действий. Каждый представлен в четырех цветах: красном, синем, желтом и зеленом.

1. «Взять 2 карты»: на рисунке две карты, и значок «+2» в верхнем правом и нижнем левом углах. Следующий участник должен взять две новые карты, пропустив ход. Чтобы не выполнять действие, можно её покрыть своей картой «+2», и тогда «наказание» переходит к следующему игроку (карты не удваиваются, он должен взять только две). Ее можно выкладывать поверх карты такого же цвета или другой «+2».  Правило применяется к игроку слева от раздающего, если карта переворачивается в самом начале игры.
2. «Реверс» или «Сменить направление»: символ выглядит как две стрелочки, направленные в разные стороны. Когда выпадает эта карта, меняется направление движения хода на противоположный (ходили по часовой стрелке, теперь будет против часовой). «Реверс» можно выложить поверх другой карты «Реверс» или в случае, когда ее цвет соответствует цвету открытой карты. 3. «Пропусти ход»: на карте изображен круг с чертой поперек, напоминающий знак «стоп». Выкладывать можно на карту того же цвета или такого же значения. Когда вы кладете эту карту, следующий за вами игрок должен пропустить свой ход. Единственный способ спастись — выложить свою карту «Пропусти ход», чтобы перевести «наказание» на следующего участника.  Если карта входит в игру в самом начале, участник по левую руку от раздающего пропускает ход, а ход переходит к следующему после него игроку.

UNO: правила ходов, подготовка, влияние карт на игру

Настольная игра предназначена для всех возрастов: детей с 5 лет и до бесконечности. Количество участников от 2 до 10, но интересней играть от 4 участников, чтобы игра была непредсказуемой.

Основная задача игроков — как можно скорее избавиться от карт на руках, и заработать нужное число баллов.

Подготовка

Подготовительный этап занимает не больше 5 минут:

1. Карты в колоде тасуются. Каждый берет по одной, и сверяют значение.
2. Номинал карточек без цифр автоматически равняется нулю, а цифровые равны своему номиналу (9 – самая дорогая, 1 – самая дешевая). Игрок, предъявивший самую дорогую карту, раздает карты.
3. Если во время жеребьевки максимальные карты оказались у двоих, им надо брать еще по карте. Тот, у кого на этот раз окажется карта более высокого номинала, становится раздающим.
4. Участники получают по 7 карт. Ведущий кладет на стол оставшуюся часть колоды. Они лежат вверх рубашками, формируя общий банк – колода Прикупа. Отсюда участники добирают карты.
5. Ведущий берет из этой колоды первую, переворачивает вверх рубашкой и открывает колоду Сброса. Это начальная карта, на которую в процессе игры будут сбрасываться другие.
6. Выпавшая активная или дикая карта сразу задает свои условия и определяет последующие действия игроков: смена направление, выбор цвета, пропуск хода и т.д.
7. Партия обычно ведется слева направо от ведущего (по часовой стрелке). За исключением тех моментов, когда первой выпадает «смена направления».

Варианты ходов

Участники по очереди выкладывают на колоду Сброса (открытая карта) подходящие карточки:

• карта одинакового цвета с открытой (зеленую на зеленую, красную на красную);
• того же значения: 7 кладут на 7 , 2 на 2, «пропусти ход» поверх другой «пропусти ход» и т.д без учета цвета;
• черные карты можно выкладывать на любые другие, но только если нет другой подходящей карты.

В случае, когда у игрока на руках нет нужной карты, он берет одну из общего банка (колода Прикуп). Прикуп осуществляется в темную, т.е. не глядя и не показывая другим игрокам.

Если номинал или цвет подходят для хода, игрок сразу избавляется от нее, выкладывая поверх активной карты. Если не подходит для хода, добавляет к своим картам и пасует. Ход переходит к следующему игроку.

Правила позволяют отказываться от хода, даже если вытянул подходящую карту. Поступок не считается нарушением, и не предполагает штрафов. Иногда полезно приберечь выгодную карту, чтобы использовать ее в критический момент.

Когда в колоде для прикупа заканчиваются карты, оставляют одну верхнюю из открытых, а прочие перемешивают, переворачивают рубашками вверх и из них собирают новую колоду Прикупа. Игра продолжается, пока кто-то полностью не избавится от всех карт на руках.

Влияние карт на игровой процесс

Самая интересная особенность UNO – активные и черные карты, которые могут полностью изменить расклад за игровым столом. Они вносят непредсказуемость в ход игры, так что каждая партия проходит по-разному.

• «Наоборот» или «Реверс» — выпадение карты меняет направление ходов в противоположную сторону. Если партия велась от ведущего по часовой стрелке (слева направо), то после ее появления движение идет справа налево. Выпадающие подряд две карты «Реверса» суммируются: направление остается тем же, которое было до первой карты.
• «Поменять цвет» — ее появление дает возможность выбрать вместо текущего цвета любой другой, включая этот. Участник, идущий следом, выкладывает карту любого значения указанного цвета. Карта используется в любое время вне зависимости от свойств верхней.
• «Поменять цвет и взять четыре» — владелец карты сам назначает текущий цвет игры. Следующий за ним участник прикупает четыре карты и пропускает ход. Она используется лишь в конкретной ситуации. Подробности описаны выше. Игрок, который идет следом, может избежать прикупа, если у него есть карта «Взять две» нового цвета.

Карты с цифрами на игровой процесс не оказывают никакого влияния.

Как выиграть в УНО

Для победы в раунде нужно избавиться от всех карт на руках раньше остальных игроков. Желательно, чтобы у соперников было как можно больше карт на руках — они превращаются в призовые очки.

Для усложнения игры добавлена оригинальная особенность игры — когда игрок бросает на стол предпоследнюю карту, он должен громко крикнуть «УНО!». Своеобразное предупреждение другим игрокам, что у тебя на руках осталась ОДНА последняя карта, и окончание игры близко. Важно сказать фразу до того, как ход перейдет к следующему игроку.

В том случае, когда предупреждение не прозвучало и противники это заметили, нарушителю придется добрать две карты. Но соперники должны сделать замечание до того, как следующий за ним игрок сделает ход.

Игра длится, пока кто-нибудь из участников не сбросит все карты до последней. У соперников есть много возможностей, чтобы препятствовать чужой победе:

• бросать дикие карты;
• заставлять пропускать ход;
• менять направление игры.

Как считать очки: подсчет по картам

Стоимость рядовых карт равняется номиналу:

• 0 дает ноль очков;
• 1 — одно;
• 2 — два;
• 3 — три;
• 4 — четыре;
• 5 — пять;
• 6 — шесть;
• 7 — семь;
• 8 — восемь;
• 9 — девять.

Стоимость каждой активной карты составляет 20 баллов:

• «Смени направление» — двадцать;
• «Пропусти ход» — двадцать;
• «+2» — двадцать.

Каждая дикая или черная дает по 50 очков:

• «Поменяй цвет» — пятьдесят;
• «+4» — пятьдесят.

По окончании партии значения оставшихся карт складываются. Итоговая сумма присваивается тому, кто первым сбросил все карты. Участник, собравший 500 баллов за счет проигравших, считается победителем. Таким образом рассчитывается результат в классическом варианте.

• игрок, обвинивший партнера в нечестной игре, когда тот предъявил карту «смена цвета + 4» и потребовавший проверки, которая не подтвердила обвинение, берет 4 карты. Если он оказался прав и проверка показала, что подозреваемый смошенничал, нарушитель берет 4 карт.

Участники по взаимной договоренности могут ввести дополнительные штрафы. Подобная строгость оправдана, если игроки часто допускают ляпы, промахи или откровенно блефуют. Все наказания в этой игре заключаются в том, чтобы заставить штрафника брать две добавочные карты не глядя (в темную).

Советы и рекомендации по игре

Для облегчения входа в игру прислушайтесь к советам от опытных игроков:

Uno (; from Spanish and Italian for ‘one’; stylized as UNO) is an American shedding-type card game that is played with a specially printed deck. The game’s general principles put it into the crazy eights family of card games, and it is similar to the traditional European game mau-mau.

It has been a Mattel brand since 1992.^[3]

History[edit]

The game was originally developed in 1971 by Merle Robbins in Reading, Ohio, a suburb of Cincinnati. When his family and friends began to play more and more, he spent $8,000 to have 5,000 copies of the game made.^[4] He sold it from his barbershop at first, and local businesses began to sell it as well. Robbins later sold the rights to Uno to a group of friends headed by Robert Tezak, a funeral parlor owner in Joliet, Illinois, for $50,000 plus royalties of 10 cents per game. Tezak formed International Games, Inc., to market Uno, with offices behind his funeral parlor. The games were produced by Lewis Saltzman of Saltzman Printers in Maywood, Illinois.

In 1992, International Games became part of the Mattel family of companies.^[5]

Official rules[edit]

The aim of the game is to be the first player to score 500 points, achieved (usually over several rounds of play) by being the first to play all of one’s own cards and scoring points for the cards still held by the other players.

The 2018 edition of the game consists of 112 cards: 25 in each of four color suits (red, yellow, green, blue), each suit consisting of one zero, two each of 1 through 9, and two each of the action cards «Skip», «Draw Two», and «Reverse». The deck also contains four «Wild» cards, four «Wild Draw Four», one «Wild Shuffle Hands» and three «Wild Customizable».^[2] Sets manufactured prior to 2018 do not contain these last two types of Wild cards, for a total of 108 cards in the deck.^[6]

For each hand, a dealer is determined by having each player randomly draw one card from the deck. The player with the highest number card deals, and all cards are reshuffled into the deck to begin the dealing.

To start a hand, seven cards are dealt to each player, and the top card of the remaining deck is flipped over and set aside to begin the discard pile. The player to the dealer’s left plays first unless the first card on the discard pile is an action or Wild card (see below). On a player’s turn, they must do one of the following:

• play one card matching the discard in color, number, or symbol
• play a Wild card, or a playable Wild Draw Four card (see restriction below)
• draw the top card from the deck, and play it if possible

Cards are played by laying them face-up on top of the discard pile. Play initially proceeds clockwise around the table.

Action or Wild cards have the following effects:

• A player who draws a playable card from the deck must either play or keep that card and may play no other card from their hand on that turn.
• A player may play a Wild card at any time, even if that player has other playable cards.
• A player may play a Wild Draw Four card only if that player has no cards matching the current color. The player may have cards of a different color matching the current number or symbol or a Wild card and still play the Wild Draw Four card.^[6] A player who plays a Wild Draw Four may be challenged by the next player in sequence (see Penalties) to prove that their hand meets this condition.
• If not otherwise challenged, an illegally played Wild Draw Four stays without penalty for its player.
• When playing a Wild or Wild Draw Four card, a player may declare the current color as the next one to be matched.
• If the draw deck runs out during play, the top discard is set aside and the rest of the pile is shuffled to create a new deck. Play then proceeds normally.
• It is illegal to trade cards of any sort with another player.

A player who plays their penultimate card must call «Uno» as a warning to the other players.^[7]

The first player to get rid of their last card («going out») wins the hand and scores points for the cards held by the other players. Number cards count their face value, all action cards count 20, and Wild and Wild Draw Four cards count 50. If a Draw Two or Wild Draw Four card is played to go out, the next player in the sequence must draw the appropriate number of cards before the score is tallied.

The first player to score 500 points wins the game.

Penalties[edit]

• If a player does not call «Uno» after laying down their penultimate card and is caught before the next player in sequence starts to take a turn (i.e., plays a card from their hand, draws from the deck, or touches the discard pile), they must draw two cards as a penalty. If the player is not caught in time or remembers to call «Uno» before being caught, no penalty applies to that player.^[6]
• If a player plays a Wild Draw Four card, the next player in turn order may choose to challenge its use. The player who used the Wild Draw Four must privately show their hand to the challenging player in order to demonstrate that they had no prior matching colored cards. If the challenge is successful, then the challenged player must draw four cards instead and play continues with the challenger. Otherwise, the challenger must draw six cards – the four cards they were already required to draw plus two more cards – and lose their turn.^[6] In either case, the Wild Draw Four stays with its chosen color.

Two-player game[edit]

In a two-player game, the Reverse card acts like a Skip card; when played, the other player misses a turn.^[8]

House rules[edit]

The following house rules are suggested in the Uno instructions to alter the game:

• Progressive or Stacking Uno: If a draw card is played, and the following player has a card with the same symbol, they can play that card and «stack» the penalty, which adds to the current penalty and passes it to the following player^[6] (although a +4 cannot be stacked on a +2, or vice versa).^[9] This house rule is so commonly used that there was widespread Twitter surprise in 2019 when Mattel stated that stacking was not part of the standard rules of Uno.^[9]
• Seven-O: Every time a «7» is played, the player who played the «7» card must trade their hand with another player of their choice. Every time a «0» is played, all players pass their hands to the next player in the current direction of play.^[6]
• Jump-In: If a player has exactly the same card (both number and color) as the top card of the discard pile, they may play it immediately, even if it is not their turn. The game then continues as if that player had just taken their turn.^[6]

2018 rule changes[edit]

The two new types of Wild cards have the following functions:

• Wild Shuffle Hands: The player using this card collects all cards held by all players, then shuffles and re-deals them.
• Wild Customizable: These cards are blank and can have a house rule assigned to them.

Either type can be played on any turn and is worth 40 points when a player goes out.^[2]

Card and deck styles[edit]

Modern Uno action cards bear symbols which denote their action, except for the Wild cards which still bear the word «Wild». Before the design change,^[when?] such cards in English versions of the game had letters only. Earlier English versions can be recognized by the absence of the white rim that surrounds the edge of most Uno cards.

Other versions of the game use symbols and images in both old and new designs, especially ones with Wild cards that do not bear the word «Wild». There are also language-free versions of the newer styles that do not bear the word «Wild» but have the same styling.

The 2010 «Uno Mod» edition uses symbols instead of letters or numbers.

On September 16, 2017, Mattel released Uno ColorAdd, which was designed specifically for those suffering from color blindness.^[10]

On October 1, 2019, Mattel released a Braille version of their game with Mark Riccobono, president of the National Federation of the Blind. Riccobono said in a press release, «The fact that a blind person is now able to play a classic game of UNO straight out of the box with both blind and sighted friends or family members is a truly meaningful moment for our community.»^[11][12]

Uno H2O[edit]

Uno H₂O differs from the standard game in that the cards are transparent and waterproof. Play is identical to the standard pre-2018 Uno game, with the addition of two types of «Wild Downpour» cards. When one of these is played, all other players must draw either one or two cards as indicated on the card. The player using it may then declare the next color to be matched.

Many variations from standard gameplay exist, such as Elimination Uno, Speed Uno and Pirate Uno.^[17]

In 2018, Mattel released a spin-off of Uno entitled Dos; the game is differentiated primarily by having a «center row» of discard piles, where pairs of cards that add up to the sum of a card on the top of one of the piles may be discarded.^[18][19]

The game can be played with two decks of standard playing cards, if the jokers are marked up as the zeroes of the four suits, and the royalty treated as the special cards.

Uno: The Game Show[edit]

In March 2013, it was announced that Mattel and the Gurin Company^[21][22] were teaming up to create a game show based on the card game, produced as a half-hour daily strip with a $100,000 cash jackpot along with a primetime version in which contestants competed for 1 million dollars. However, the idea was scrapped later on.

Film adaptation[edit]

On February 4, 2021, an action heist comedy film based on the game was announced to be in development for Mattel Films with Lil Yachty of record label Quality Control Music developing and being eyed for the lead role alongside the label’s managers Kevin «Coach K» Lee and Pierre «P» Thomas, and Brian Sher for Quality Films producing, Marcy Kelly writing, and Robbie Brenner and Kevin McKeon leading the project as executive producer and supervising producer, respectively.^[23]

In a two-player game, the Reverse card acts like a Skip card; when played, the other player misses a turn.^[8]

House rules[edit]

The following house rules are suggested in the Uno instructions to alter the game:

• Progressive or Stacking Uno: If a draw card is played, and the following player has a card with the same symbol, they can play that card and «stack» the penalty, which adds to the current penalty and passes it to the following player^[6] (although a +4 cannot be stacked on a +2, or vice versa).^[9] This house rule is so commonly used that there was widespread Twitter surprise in 2019 when Mattel stated that stacking was not part of the standard rules of Uno.^[9]
• Seven-O: Every time a «7» is played, the player who played the «7» card must trade their hand with another player of their choice. Every time a «0» is played, all players pass their hands to the next player in the current direction of play.^[6]
• Jump-In: If a player has exactly the same card (both number and color) as the top card of the discard pile, they may play it immediately, even if it is not their turn. The game then continues as if that player had just taken their turn.^[6]

2018 rule changes[edit]

The two new types of Wild cards have the following functions:

• Wild Shuffle Hands: The player using this card collects all cards held by all players, then shuffles and re-deals them.
• Wild Customizable: These cards are blank and can have a house rule assigned to them.

Either type can be played on any turn and is worth 40 points when a player goes out.^[2]

Card and deck styles[edit]

Modern Uno action cards bear symbols which denote their action, except for the Wild cards which still bear the word «Wild». Before the design change,^[when?] such cards in English versions of the game had letters only. Earlier English versions can be recognized by the absence of the white rim that surrounds the edge of most Uno cards.

Other versions of the game use symbols and images in both old and new designs, especially ones with Wild cards that do not bear the word «Wild». There are also language-free versions of the newer styles that do not bear the word «Wild» but have the same styling.

The 2010 «Uno Mod» edition uses symbols instead of letters or numbers.

On September 16, 2017, Mattel released Uno ColorAdd, which was designed specifically for those suffering from color blindness.^[10]

On October 1, 2019, Mattel released a Braille version of their game with Mark Riccobono, president of the National Federation of the Blind. Riccobono said in a press release, «The fact that a blind person is now able to play a classic game of UNO straight out of the box with both blind and sighted friends or family members is a truly meaningful moment for our community.»^[11][12]

Uno H2O[edit]

Uno H₂O differs from the standard game in that the cards are transparent and waterproof. Play is identical to the standard pre-2018 Uno game, with the addition of two types of «Wild Downpour» cards. When one of these is played, all other players must draw either one or two cards as indicated on the card. The player using it may then declare the next color to be matched.

Variations[edit]

Many variations from standard gameplay exist, such as Elimination Uno, Speed Uno and Pirate Uno.^[17]

In 2018, Mattel released a spin-off of Uno entitled Dos; the game is differentiated primarily by having a «center row» of discard piles, where pairs of cards that add up to the sum of a card on the top of one of the piles may be discarded.^[18][19]

The game can be played with two decks of standard playing cards, if the jokers are marked up as the zeroes of the four suits, and the royalty treated as the special cards.

Uno: The Game Show[edit]

In March 2013, it was announced that Mattel and the Gurin Company^[21][22] were teaming up to create a game show based on the card game, produced as a half-hour daily strip with a $100,000 cash jackpot along with a primetime version in which contestants competed for 1 million dollars. However, the idea was scrapped later on.

Film adaptation[edit]

On February 4, 2021, an action heist comedy film based on the game was announced to be in development for Mattel Films with Lil Yachty of record label Quality Control Music developing and being eyed for the lead role alongside the label’s managers Kevin «Coach K» Lee and Pierre «P» Thomas, and Brian Sher for Quality Films producing, Marcy Kelly writing, and Robbie Brenner and Kevin McKeon leading the project as executive producer and supervising producer, respectively.^[23]

• Если игрок разыгрывает карту «Возьми четыре», следующий игрок в порядке очереди может оспорить ее использование. Игрок, который использовал «Возьми четыре», должен в частном порядке показать свою руку вызывающему игроку, чтобы продемонстрировать, что у него ранее не было совпадающих цветных карт. Если вызов успешен, то вызываемый игрок должен вместо этого взять четыре карты, и игра продолжается со следующим игроком. В противном случае следующий игрок должен взять шесть карт — четыре карты, которые он уже должен был взять, плюс еще две карты — и проиграть свой ход.
